I recently made the jump to upgrade to Windows 11 (first on my 4-year-old HP Spectre Laptop, then on my Ryzen Zen 3 Desktop).

Almost immediately, I noticed that my download speeds were a fraction of what they used to be (1/20th).

Turns out this is an issue with auto-negotiation on my onboard Realtek NIC.

This is easily fixed by specifying the highest supported setting on your network. For me, 1 GB.

NOTE: The before image is broken because OVH sucks and deleted both my server and backups without giving me the 60 days warning they said they would and only contacted via email….

After (switching back – you can see the speed drop dramatically):

Changing the setting (under Device Manager => Network Adapters => (In my case, “Realtek PCIe 2.5gbE Family Controller”) => Properties => Advanced => “Speed & Duplex”

I hope this helps someone else out there!

NOTE: After toggling this setting (reverting the change) it still seems to work…. Argh.. $MS.

Apparently Winders has started using a setting called ‘Window Auto Tuning’ on your network adapter which can potentially throttle your available bandwidth. In other words, this can cause you to transmit / receive data at a reduced rate than your hardware / ISP is actual capable of delivering to you.

In my case, I was experiencing very slow uploads and stream quality. Speedtest.net was yielding results of about 1.5 Mbps upload/upstream, while my ISP has me limited to 10 mbps. After changing this setting, I immediately got the 9-10 Mbps I was expecting (no reboot required).

To view the setting via cmd.exe, run:

netsh interface tcp show global

To change it run:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

If you don’t like the results, you can revert with:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

After each command you should see “Ok” to show it was successful.

NOTE: Don’t change this setting unless you’re having an issue with your net speed! For many, the setting as configured should be fine however not for everyone hence the need to explore this setting a bit further.

Hollywood needs the web, not the other way around….

Take it from someone who has tried about probably 8 different custom ROMs now (including giving stock a chance) and believe me when I say that this is the one to get — hands down.

Best ROM I’ve used yet for the HTC EVO 4G LTE

Features:

-great performance (additional options to easily overclock (undervolt, overvolt) up to 1.8 ghz)

-great stability

-great battery life (I get pretty much 2X) a MUST download for me was Better Widget Reborn – you can install this and observe the battery stats both before and after running the new ROM and you’ll actually see the results

-fixes many annoying ‘features’ of the stock ROM -Jelly Bean 4.1.1 Just remember a few things:

1.)  must be s-off – if you don’t know how to do this read here:

2.) if you’re s-on you can actually still run it if you update the radio firmware with a flashable  zip – HOWEVER, you must also be on HBOOT 1.12 (you can check these versions from the recovery boot screen; turn off phone and hold vol down and power).

2a.) MAKE SURE YOU RESET GOOGLE WALLET before switching ROMS!!!

2b.) I also like to use Titanium Backup to backup my current apps / data so I can easily restore them when I move to a new custom ROM.

3.) Make sure factory reset before installing.

4.) Always take a nandroid backup of your current ROM (instructions here).
